When it comes to fertility treatment options, two of the most popular solutions include ovulation-inducing medications and assisted reproductive treatments (ART). This latter path of treatments can feel incredibly clinical, and might conjure up images of doctor’s visits and cold exam rooms. The most common assisted reproductive treatment options are intrauterine insemination (IUI) and Invitro fertilization (IVF). However, while there are certain ART methods that require a lengthy, clinical (and sometimes, expensive) process, not all fertility techniques require this level of medical assistance. In fact, some types of procedures can be done right at home!
What is Cervical Cap Insemination?
Insemination by way of cervical cap is a less-invasive, DIY style of fertility treatment. It is increasingly growing in popularity, particularly since it offers couples a way to reduce stress and personalize their experience. It is a great option for couples who are just starting to explore fertility assistance, as well as for those who are not quite ready to put efforts into costly medical treatments. It can also be a way to potentially salvage any romance that comes with conceiving.
Cervical cap insemination has been in use since the 1960’s and is the technique utilized by the Stork® OTC. The Stork OTC conception device is an FDA cleared, over-the-counter medical device that combines the efficacy of clinical insemination with the comfort of natural intercourse.
How Cervical Cap Insemination Assists with Conception
When it comes to fertility, there are a LOT of factors that can affect how easily couples conceive, including how well the reproductive systems of both partners are functioning. Unfortunately, due to both the complexity of reproductive health and the many factors that affect it, it can be extremely frustrating for a couple who has trouble getting pregnant to know what the underlying issue behind their conception difficulties might be. Couples experiencing this often feel like they have no control and are at the mercy of expensive fertility treatments and doctor’s visits.
Because we understand this frustration well, we are here to help you take control of one aspect of this conception process that can easily be addressed right at home. We also hope to give you additional fertility options so that you can be better prepared to start (or continue!) trying for a baby.
In many cases, the difficulties in conception first begin after the intercourse – when the sperm need to make the long and demanding journey through a woman’s vaginal canal, cervix, and uterus before they enter the Fallopian tubes to reach a woman’s ovulated egg. This can make for a lot of work, especially since a woman’s body is not always inviting for sperm. Sometimes, her immune system will see the sperm as an invader and signal an attack. Other times, the pH levels of her vaginal canal could affect whether sperm make it past and into the cervix.
Once the sperm does enter the cervix, though, the journey is far from over. They must then fight through a woman’s cervical mucus, which works to filter out the lower quality sperm. Fortunately, though, when a woman is ovulating and at her most fertile, this mucus changes and becomes thinner and slicker in consistency, which gives sperm a better chance to successfully swim through.
Afterwards, assuming all has gone well, the sperm will reach the uterus, which will then transport them towards the Fallopian tubes using muscle contractions. This is when the sperm will hopefully reach the woman’s egg, if one is present, and attempt to fertilize it by breaking through its surrounding membrane.
As you can see, there are a lot of steps in this process. Because reproduction is so rigorous and complicated, it’s easy for reproductive health issues – or even outside factors – to hinder the sperm’s advancements long before they reach an egg. Because of this, many couples find that adding an additional element of assistance can optimize their chances of conception. This is where the Stork OTC comes in.
Our over-the-counter fertility product, The Stork OTC, utilizes the clinically-proven approach of cervical cap insemination to help with becoming pregnant. Though it can potentially help any couple trying to get pregnant, by design, The Stork OTC is a particularly great option for couples who know they are dealing with a low sperm count, sperm motility issues, or even with low vaginal pH levels.
The Stork OTC allows a woman to collect sperm via a condom-like sheath and cap, which can be attached to an applicator device after intercourse. The applicator will allow a woman to insert the sperm, safely stored in the cap, into her vagina and near her cervix. Once there, the cap can deliver a higher concentration of sperm directly to her cervix, bypassing the initial stages sperm typically endure after ejaculation.
This method helps bypass any sperm loss in the vaginal tract, which increases their chances for survival. Additionally, the cervical cap is HSSA tested, and will not cause harm to the sperms themselves during this technique. So not only does the Stork OTC help to naturally improve fertility, but it’s an option for couples who are looking for affordable help getting pregnant.
The natural process of getting pregnant is not always a walk in the park. With so many elements that could possibly go wrong, it can feel overwhelming for a couple when they cannot conceive right away. Hopefully this can illuminate some of that process for you, and give you the confidence to keep trying!
